“What If Someone Calls My Book Racist?”: Back To Basics Book Writing For Authors

I decided to go on a bit of a rant to discuss reviews that specifically call out a book for being racist, sexist, etc after seeing an author’s comments on Twitter re: the Hale situation. That author basically asked if she should just do nothing when someone accuses her book for being any of those things I mentioned. My answer? Check it out below:

*If a reader…

It surprises me when some authors don’t get this basic concept. I sincerely wonder if publishers and/or agents sit their debut authors down, look them in the eye and tell them in a reassuring whisper, “It’s done. Let it goooooo,” and then disappear in a cloud of dramatic smoke.

  1. This is a great post, Adro. You hit the nail on the head. You can’t (and shouldn’t!) correct every review. What you can and should do, if you’re thick skinned enough to read the bad reviews, is do so and take the feedback to grow your craft. But only do so, if you are absolutely, 100% sure you can take it. If not, ignore it and move on.
