I’m A Fan. Now What?: Places to Go For Your Superhero Fix

Superhero Week is coming to an end and you’re thinking, “NOOOOOOOOO” but also, “What now? Where else can I get my fix for superhero awesomeness?” Well, it’s a good thing you know me because I have a few suggestions…

  • Free Comic Book Day (May 4th 2013)

Free Comic Book Day is on the first Saturday of May every year and, at participating comic book stores, you get free comics! This is a great day for newbies to start their journey into comics. The selection is diverse so everyone in the family, no matter how young or old, has something to grab. You can check out the site for what comics are available but note that it depends on the particular comic book store as to what comics they’ll have on the day. Still not convinced? Then don’t take my word for it…take Hugh Jackman’s:

A convention for all things geeky, FanExpo Canada is held in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in downtown Toronto. There’s everything for comics, sci fi, horror, gaming, anime and sports fans (sports is a new thing for 2013). This year will be my third year going and the guests listed so far are amazing!

Richard Dean Anderson (Stargate SG-1)

George Takei (Star Trek)

Lena Headey (Game of Thrones/Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles)

Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead)

Stan Lee (Legendary Comic Creator)

James Hong (Blade Runner)

Dean Cain (Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman)

David Hasselhoff (Baywatch)

Morena Baccarin (Firefly)

Nathan Fillion (Firefly/Castle)

More will be announced as we get closer to the event. Last year, I saw people from all over the country, the States and even from other countries outside of North America. There’s also cosplayers who dress up during the four days as their favourite hero, anime character etc. It’s a ton of fun.

How could I forget!!! I was reminded by Tiff about this awesome festival going on next weekend. It takes place at the Toronto Reference Library & The Appel Salon for fans of comics, graphic novels and anime. Check out the site for a list of the guests like Art Spiegelman (Maus) and programs.

San Diego Comic Con is the biggest geek extravaganza out there. It’s FanExpo Canada on steroids and it’s a place I’ve been dreaming of going. I just…I…*sighs*. If you have the chance to go, then GO!
